Victory to Mother India

In Memory of the Pulwama Martyrs – 6 Years of a Service of Honour

Dr. Ravikiran Patwardhan Patwardhan Ayurvedic Clinic, Sirsi 9242122874

February 14, 2019 — A day India can never forget. In Pulwama, a horrific suicide attack claimed the lives of 40 brave जवानs of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). An explosive-laden vehicle rammed into a bus that was part of a convoy of around 78 buses carrying approximately 2,500 paramilitary personnel from Jammu to Srinagar.

That day, a deep question arose in my heart: “When our soldiers are sacrificing their lives for the nation, what are we doing for them?”

I cannot go to the border and carry a gun. But the tool in my hand is my service.

That night, my wife and I arrived at a firm decision — From February 15, 2019 onwards, we would provide free Ayurvedic consultation and necessary medicines to serving soldiers, ex-servicemen, and their families.

No calculations. No expectations of publicity. This was simply our humble “squirrel’s contribution.”

At 9:30 PM, I shared this message through WhatsApp. Immediately, many doctors across Karnataka responded saying, “We will start the same service in our clinics.” Within a week, media friends prominently published this information in newspapers.

A Culture of Respect for Soldiers in Sirsi

This small step led to a significant change in mindset in Sirsi.

Today, many doctors in Sirsi provide honour-based medical services to soldiers in their clinics and hospitals.

Business owners, hotel proprietors, auto-rickshaw drivers, local organizations, and government officials in Sirsi also voluntarily express their respect for soldiers.

The grand procession organized to welcome Subedar Kashinath Naik upon his retirement and return to Sirsi stands as testimony to this growing respect.

One more aspiration — an Army weapons exhibition should be organized in Sirsi to create greater awareness about our armed forces.

---

Our Stand

Many retired soldiers have insisted, “We will pay the fees.” But we have not accepted payment from anyone.

This is not charity — it is our duty and our expression of respect.

✦ Our soldiers serve in extreme conditions ranging from -40°C to +50°C. ✦ They risk their lives every moment to protect the nation. ✦ Even after retirement, they remain our pride.

On February 15, 2025, this honourable service completes 6 years.

Heartfelt gratitude to all serving soldiers, ex-servicemen, and their families for giving us this opportunity to serve.

✍ A Reader’s Reflection

After reading Dr. Ravikiran’s words, a question arose — Does one need a big position or a big platform to serve?

One painful night. One family decision. One simple WhatsApp message.

That was enough to touch the heart of an entire town.

“Not charity, but duty” — these four words echo as a model of true civic responsibility.

Like the squirrel in the Ramayana that carried grains of sand to help build the bridge for Lord Rama, this humble “squirrel’s service” has become a bridge of love between soldiers and civilians.

May this inspiration spread beyond Sirsi — to every taluk in Karnataka and every corner of India.

Hands that guard the borders on one side, Hands that heal the wounded on the other — When both join together, India stands secure.
